cornbread

Between the morning sickness, ultrasounds and baby showers, the most exciting thing for me as a pregnant woman was decorating my son’s nursery. From the moment I got pregnant with my son back in 2008 I searched far and wide for cute well-made nursery décor that didn’t look like the same old stuff you see in every nursery or the outrageously expensive things you see in some magazines. Enter Shugabee Lane!
They say everything is bigger and better in Texas (Sorry but they do say that!). Although I am not sure Jamie over at Shugabee Lane has bigger items than others, she most assuredly has better nursery décor than those I have came across. Jamie is a fellow Texan and now friend who began a wonderful business with her husband to put to use the amazing design and woodworking talents they have been so blessed with. Shugabee Lane has AMAZING accessories for your little one’s room and even a handful of items for the mom too! From handmade memory boards that scream chic to customized building blocks that are not only absolutely adorable but useful and fun for the baby.

Not finding out the sex of the baby- no worries! Pick from a neutral brown memory board or a cute set of blocks customized with your favorite nursery rhymes. My favorite is the Little Man wooden box frame and the Sweetness frame for a girl. Oh, how I hope I have a girl someday!

So sit back and get to know a little more about Shugabee Lane and make sure to head on over to Shugabee Lane and check out all the amazing accessories this husband and wife team have to offer! You won’t be disappointed and what great gifts they would be for Christmas this year- right now you can get 15% off every order! Killer!

1) Tell me some basic info about yourself. (including one fun fact)
After leaving my career to be a stay at home mom, my husband has always encouraged me to start a business utilizing my never-ending creative mind! We have 3 little ones, Avery, 4, Kai is 2 and Addison is 9 mo. We often struggled when decorating my little one’s nurseries to find unique decor. So with my husband’s woodworking talent and my talent for design we made the things we couldn’t find. And that is how Shugabee Lane came to life! The name was inspired by my little ones, they are my little Shugabee’s. We would love to grow our business on Etsy as well as locally. We just opened a booth space in an antique/gift shop in Tomball (Granny’s Korner) last month so we are working on that in too.

2) Where do you hope to see you business going?

My inspiration… from all over! My little ones, listening to other moms, vintage style mixed with today’s trends, etc. Everything we make we create it as if I were making it for our own home.
3) Where do you find inspiration?
My creativity does not stop and I often say to my husband, “you know what we can make?…” I think he cringes a little when I say that.

4) Are there any
products you haven’t created that you hope to? I have so many ideas of new beautiful, one of a kind decor we can create. The list is too long but I look forward to growing and bringing a few of them to life.

5) Why do you love what you do? Are there any down sides?
I love what I do because it challenges me beyond Mommyhood. It also gives my husband and I a way to combine our talents and hobbies. Lastly, it is fun to involve our kids in the business. My oldest, Avery, and I go on “button hunts” together at antique shops frequently for our vintage button magnets and Kai, our 2 year old, is Daddy’s little helper with the construction. I hope the kids will grow up watching the business grow and have fond memories.
Downsides? Life is busy and balancing it all can be tough at times. My husband is a television reporter for KHOU so balancing his career demands, the kiddos, and Shugabee Lane can be challenging.

6) What has surprised you the most about the business?
I am surprised by how wonderful our customers have been. You hear about working with the public and how horrible that can be but our customers are the sweetest most wonderful people! We are truly blessed.

In honor of our new Belleicious Sponsor I thought I would share with you a tried and true Texan cornbread recipe that I found a while back and it truly is one of the easiest and best recipes I have ever made. Seriously, I am not lying to you. I just wouldn’t do that! You can trust me here at Kitchen Belleicious and when I say this is the best cornbread you have ever put in your mouth you better believe it is true. This recipe comes in light of the winter months when a pot of hearty soup is always on the table. What is better than a hot pot of soup when it is freezing outside? A hot pot of soup with the BEST CORNBREAD you have ever had!
I sprinkled a bit of paprika on top before baking and it always seems to amaze me how something as simple as that can add so much flavor to a dish. The cornbread is sweet but salty and has the perfect texture. You can pick it up with your hands but it just falls apart in your mouth! Speaking of mouth, “Is your mouth watering yet?”

Texas Cornbread

Ingredients:

1 cup cornmeal
1 cup flour
1 egg
2/3 cup sugar
1 tsp salt
3 1/2 tsp baking powder
1 cup milk
1/3 cup vegetable oil
1/2 tsp paprika for sprinkling, optional
1 TBSP butter, melted

Directions:

Mix the dry ingredients together in a large mixing bowl then add the egg, milk and vegetable oil. Do not over-mix- just make sure all ingredients have been combined. Pour into a greased round pan and sprinkle with the paprika. Bake in the oven at 400 degrees for 20-25 minutes. Brush with the butter and serve warm! ENJOY!
